History in brief:
The "New Hansaviertel", a product of the International Builders Fair of 1957, is
still famous around the world as a monument of modern architecture and urban
development. The quarter as a whole, including the public park, is under a
protection order.
With the "Old Hansaviertel", founded 1872 - 1900, the area, initially a quiet,
aristocratic quarter, has emerged as a highly favoured location right at the
border of the Tiergarten, Berlin′s central park.
As a result of the events of World War II, 75% of the quarter was destroyed in
November 1943. An impression of the manorial character of the Hansaviertel at
that time can still be found at Claudiusstrasse, Flensburger Strasse and
Holsteiner Ufer.
Due to its perfect location right between the Center-West and the Center-East of
the city, neighbouring the Tiergarten, the government and the embassy district,
the Hansaviertel has become even more popular and important after German
Reunification in 1989.
